Third level? I thought the ECWC was second to the European cup and the Inter Cities Fairs cup, which eventually became the UEFA cup, was third level?

Comfortable win that should’ve been 3 or 4. Benahma again failing us in front of goal.

The group games were always going to be a bit pedestrian, especially with us pissing pretty much every game. People forget that it was quite similar in the Europa group stage last season.

Guarantee all these morons who think we’re too big for this comp will be coming out the woodwork looking for tickets for the knockouts.

nerd,

They didn't have Conte as manager.

Anyway. Let us not dwell on the whys and hows of it, let us just enjoy that it happened :-)

I wonder if in 1965, 1976 or 1981 anyone called Europes third level cup competition Mickey Mouse?

We are well overdue a trophy
THIS ONE WILL DO FINE

Even if you are one that thinks this comp is mickey mouse, surely the fact that winning it gets you into the EL should be enough reason to see that's it's worth winning?

Looking at the teams left, and who's likely to fall down from the Europa, I think it'll be a little bit of a failure if we don't end up winning it.

We should fear no one.

“Anyone knocking the Europa Conference League has very short memories”

This. Spurs got knocked out in the group stage last year, winning only 2 games (granted they forfeited one because of covaids). And don’t listen to any of their mongoloid fans saying they didn’t take it seriously. They did. Kane played plenty. They rotated far less than we have and got knocked out. We’ve won all 5.

daveyg,

We didn't play with 5 along the back though, Aguerd was, essentially, The defensive line with our other four defensive players keeping a high line snuffing out what little they put up and pushing back on.

It was a weird watch at times:

Seeing Oggie up higher than Coventry more than once in normal play not a set piece. I kept unconciously, looking back to the centre to remiind myself that there was someone 'At home'.

Coufal out in advance of Johnson was another one. kept wondering why Johnson wasn't completing the switch when Coufal was in acres of space but then he did and i remembered: He doesn't pass particularly well and Coufal doesn't control or cross well either.

Scamacca and Antonio on the pitch together NEITHER playing natural CF.

And finally as already mentioned when Antonio was hooked and Scamacca was playing as a CF seeing him CAMPED OUT in a beautiful position, with space that never got closed down but no one even tried to find him.

Fixture week of hell nearly over, key players rested. 100% record in the competition. Lovely warm night under lights.

And a few pints at Tap East beforehand.

All with my Son.

I had a smashing time :-)

Stoat agag, just read that and slopped tea over my T shirt

"Fornals was our Man of the Match as we felt that he seldom put in a foot wrong. He was impressive taking on players and played a number of important passes into the final third. He also had a pass accuracy north of 85 per cent which is never a bad thing."

FCJ - tend to agree on the comparison of Downes and Coventry but would like him ( Coventry) to be tried in tge Premiership at some point. The one thing he seems to have over Downes is his range of passing. Bit like Noble he can pick someone out with a 25 yard or more pass and we are crying out for accurate passers of a football.

What I would say is that both Downes and Coventry are markedly better footballers technically than Soucek. It must solely be down to physicality and strength why he gets picked every game? Some will say he gets goals but that is a distant memory. He does still get on the end of things from time to time in the box so maybe Moyes thinks eventually a few goals will come his way? Without that I’m not seeing much else he can do that is better than Downes and even Coventry?

The disgraceful league / sky decision to schedule our match on Monday this week made last night impossible in terms of a stronger line up.
We did enough and all we needed to do.

This cup is our main priority this year. We will be full strength with it in march.

Like most the side Coventry disappeared in the second half. He'll do alright in the cups as he is a tidy enough passer and looks forward with his passing but from what I've seen I think Downes has more about him in terms of getting stuck in, retaining the ball and breaking up play.

Mike O
That's a poor excuse.
Moyes could of easily set up a team with a more attacking line up. No need for 5 at the back against this oppo.
Aguerd was a huge positive as was Coventry .
Another Ogbonna testimoanial, he's finished tbh, sorry to say. How many more games. he'll have a month break now then he'll need the same amount of games.
Johson not required and a half each for Downes/Soucek/Rice/
4-3-3

Your absolutely right pagey. This is by far the easiest route for us to continue with European football and to win a trophy. Its more important than the league this season, we would really struggle to get top 6 even if we play well all season

Aguerd resembles Rice when he’s on the ball. He looks like he’s one of those players who seems to have more time than anyone else.

Anyone knocking the Europa Conference League has very short memories. In fact, it’s the perfect competition for teams like us and gives us vital experience of playing in Europe.

It’s by far the best chance we have of winning a trophy this year (We’re 4/1 second favourites behind Villareal who have just lost their manager) and that would mean a long-awaited trophy and a place in the Europa League the following season. How is that a bad thing? We’re in the last 16 and resume in March. Perfect.

I watched Roma win it last season and they were loving it. Of course they were. We’re the team that everyone wants to avoid. Enjoy it and embrace it.

With the condensed season because of the WC in the middle these games have been about getting to the top of the group and avoiding an extra round while remembering we go to Old Trafford on Sunday.
Job done with the added advantage that we can keep anyone important at home for the final Romania trip.

Testimonial pace game against a team that wouldnt have scored if they were still playing now .... League 1 standard team at best as are the other two Anderlecht & Steaua Bucharest who used to be decent in the dim distant past.. Anderlecht in the days of Dutch 70's greats & Steaua when Ceausescu ruled and used to 'persuade' players to play for them.

On the pitch we were too laboured in our movement and passing & had the season long problem of abysmal finishing.
High point was obviously Aguerd being able to stroll through 75mins and get some miles in.
No real test but moves well , nice left foot and was the one defender trying to get us moving forward.
Hopefully will be our regular left sided centre half in a 4 along side Zouma or Dawson very soon.

benrama- if you need any (more) illustration that he doesnt have the right composure to be clinical and make the right decusions, consistently, it ws last night- could /should have scored four, mostly worried the row of empty seats in block 252

Another vote for Aguerd

I hope I'm not getting carried away on that one performance, which was admittedly against mediocre opponents, but his display looked really promising. Really comfortable on the ball, sprayed a couple of huge long passes around, looks like he reads the game well, for someone in a central 'sweeper' role, and looks to have plenty of pace, which hopefully will give the team the chance to play a bit further up the pitch, particularly if we play with wing backs.

I'd still prefer us to play four at the back though.

Positives
Aguerd. Perfect game for him to return. He looked lively and hungry but composed.
Coventry. Good run out.
Lanzini. Really put himself about.
Ogbonna. Playing out on left and looking good there.

Negatives
Johnson and Coufal together on one side? Urgh
Fornals. Industrious and hard working but slowed things down few poor decisions.
Antonio. Disinterested?
Scamacca No not him but Seeing him take up some lovely positions but seemingly no one else did.
